The Passivhaus concept was launched in 1990. It is a construction concept for application in any environment. It centres on the use of sun, internal heat sources and heat recovery, combined with an energy efficient envelope and controlled ventilation in a building, to reduce the need for conventional fossil fuel-fired heating systems significantly. The target is 90% energy savings compared with typical building stock.
